Three students were hospitalized after showing signs of a drug overdose at a South Florida middle school, multiple outlets have reported.
Broward Sheriff’s Office Fire Rescue said they transported students to local hospitals from Lauderdale Lakes Middle School Monday morning, the Miami Herald reported. Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Michael Kane told the Herald the substance causing the symptoms was not immediately known.
Officials said Monday the children were in "stable" condition, WSVN reported.
Lauderdale Lakes Middle School is located approximately 35 miles north of Miami. The school's website shows it is a magnet school in Broward County, teaching kids in grades 6 through 8.
Florida students took 'edibles', school officials say
A statement from Broward County Public Schools shared with USA TODAY Tuesday indicated that the students took "edibles" with an unknown substance. Where the children got the edibles is under investigation.
"Parents and guardians are reminded to speak with their children about the importance of positive decision-making and maintaining a drug-free and healthy environment, stressing the potential risks associated with sharing unpackaged and unfamiliar food items," the statement read. "Students who knowingly consume and/or transmit illicit substances on campus can be subject to disciplinary consequences as outlined in The Code Book for Student Conduct."
