Niall Horan may be the returning champion on "The Voice," but the Queen of Country is a force to be reckoned with.
Country music icon Reba McEntire vied for Oklahoma-born singer Jordan Rainer alongside Horan and returning coaches Gwen Stefani and John Legend during the Season 24 premiere Monday night. McEntire made her debut on the NBC singing competition following the exit of longtime coach Blake Shelton.
McEntire and Rainer connected over their shared Oklahoma roots after Rainer’s fiery rendition of McEntire’s song “Fancy.” But the pair’s conversation was interrupted by Horan, who pressed his chair button to play complimentary messages such as “Niall is a global superstar” and “Niall is an attractive guy” in the voice of Shelton.
In response, McEntire pulled out a sparkly scepter and walked over to Horan’s chair to block his view of Rainer. “I am the queen. You cannot speak,” McEntire said.
In the end, Horan’s Shelton endorsement was no match for McEntire’s icon status, as Rainer chose McEntire as her coach.
“Sadly, not even the king of ‘The Voice’ could help me with Jordan, and now I have to deal with the queen of country,” Horan said. “I’m really up against it.”
Here’s what else went down on Monday’s episode.
Reba McEntire loses ‘impressive’ teen singer to Niall Horan after crowning herself
Even queens have to share the spotlight from time to time.
Teen vocalist Sophia Hoffman, who unsuccessfully auditioned for Season 23, won over McEntire and Horan with her soulful performance of Demi Lovato’s “Tell Me You Love Me.”
Horan praised the 18-year-old for her precociousness as a singer. “There was so much more grit and maturity to it than I was expecting,” he said. “You showed us all sides of your voice, which was so impressive.”
McEntire, who had grabbed her scepter and put on a matching crown, flexed her triple-threat chops and threw shade at her fellow coach.
“I am thrilled to death that you did come back. This one did not turn around for you,” McEntire told Hoffman, referencing Horan. “I’ve been in the business a long time, not only on Broadway and television but lots of time on the stage, so I’d love to share my expertise with you.”
McEntire’s showbiz stature couldn’t beat Horan’s charm though. Hoffman chose to join Team Niall.
“Queen Reba wore the crown and she wore it well, but also Prince Niall is here and he’s coming for all of you,” Horan said.
Gwen Stefani ‘super bummed’ over losing country singer to Reba McEntire
Gwen Stefani may be married to country royalty, but the reign of McEntire remains supreme.
Country singer Jackson Snelling scored chair turns from McEntire and Stefani with his warm cover of “If Heaven Wasn’t So Far Away” by Justin Moore.
“I grew up on a working cattle ranch: I’m a third-generation rodeo brat. So, country music is my life, my foundation,” McEntire said. “To hear you come on (the show) and to sing you like did today, I am just so proud to be in the country music business and proud that you’re representing us.”
Stefani talked up her country know-how by citing her marriage with Shelton and their pair of country hits.
“I’ve had two No. 1 hits on country radio,” Stefani said, to which McEntire replied, “I’ve had more than two.”
McEntire’s track record seemed to win out, as Snelling chose the country music veteran to be his coach.
Stefani said she was “super bummed” to lose the Indiana singer to McEntire. “I really want a country artist on my team,” she said.
Did John Legend win over ‘magical’ 4-chair singer with impromptu duet?
All is fair in love and musical war on “The Voice.”
New Jersey singer Mara Justine blew the coaches away with her powerhouse rendition of Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” earning the 21-year-old a four-chair turn.
Legend endeared himself to Justine by pointing out he was the first coach to spin around in his chair. “They just didn’t have the foresight that I had in understanding what a magical gem you are as a vocalist,” he said.
Horan took a page from his “Voice” dad Shelton’s playbook to win over Justine. The One Direction alum hit his chair button to lower an enlarged, red foam finger from the ceiling with the words “pick Niall” written across it (Shelton employed the same tactic last season). “He taught me how to do absolutely anything to make sure you that you get a team member,” Horan said.
But Legend wouldn’t let Horan have the last word – or singing note. The Grammy-winning singer invited Justine to perform an impromptu duet of his song “All of Me” onstage, prompting Horan to lie on the floor in frustration.
“This has been quite entertaining for all of us,” McEntire told Justine. “Who do you pick as your coach?”
Viewers will have to wait to find out which coach emerged victorious. Justine’s decision will be revealed on Tuesday’s episode.
